Onset/Rime Assessment
The purpose of this assessment is to show the student’s ability to blend the first sound in the word (onset) and the rest of the word (rime). This assessment uses circles and wedges in various colors. This assessment provides the teacher with a script to read, and the student’s level of ease and accuracy in completing this activity with the teacher will clearly indicate the student’s understanding of onset and rime.

Diagnostic Spelling Test
This diagnostic spelling test contains 50 words arranged by increasing difficulty by Leonard P. Ayres. Students who are able to read take the test immediately at the beginning of a new school year. The results are used to determine skill-level placement, and to establish a benchmark for measuring improvement throughout the year. Beginning non-readers take this test after covering the first 140 sight words. This assessment can be used to monitor progress and evaluate achievement.

This oral reading fluency is a Florida assessment for instruction in reading. Oral reading fluency is necessary for successful reading comprehension. This assessment contains eleven passages for first grade and eleven for second grade. The student reads selected passages aloud, and the student's time and errors are recorded on the score sheet.
